Formerly a kindergarten teacher, now a farmer and operator of a farm café: Sandra Kochan has been living on a poultry farm in Hunsrück for eight years. For the sake of love. Together with her partner Volker and his two grown-up children, she looks after chickens and, during the season, geese and turkeys. Their "petting zoo" also includes three donkeys. 20 hectares of land belong to the farm. Sandra and Volker market the eggs and meat directly from the farm. Together with her husband, she runs a fourth-generation dairy farm with 50 hectares each of arable land and grassland. Maria is a trained medical assistant and the welfare of her animals is very close to her heart. That's why they didn't want a large farm. Maria and Martin had even considered giving up the farm. Their solution: three vacation homes, since 2018 as a second mainstay. Maria grew up as one of seven children on a farm with cows and pigs. She met Martin when she was 17. Her compensation is music. A life in nature makes Kerstin Riek happy. With her flock of sheep, she moves through the juniper heathland of the Swabian Alb. With her mother, Kerstin looks after 900 Merinoland sheep and 50 goats. With the animals, they maintain the landscape around their farm in Nattheim and preserve the heath landscape. Kerstin was 15 when her uncle died in a work accident. He was her great role model and so she decided to continue the family tradition as a shepherdess. Kerstin did the apprenticeship, the driver's license and the master. Whether parents, cousins or friend:ing, everyone stands together. The family also grows winter feed for the sheep. Kerstin slaughters once a week for direct marketing in her own slaughterhouse. Barbara Grimm, a trained interior decorator, took over her parents' farm with her husband Michael in 2017 and converted to organic farming. They specialize in viticulture and arable farming. About 450 hectares belong to the family farm in the Franconian town of Külsheim. In addition to wine, the Grimm family grows organic vegetables and cereals - spelt, wheat, barley, corn, peas, potatoes, pumpkins, chickpeas, soybeans, hemp or millet. Caraway, anise or coriander are also a specialty. Their vineyards are the Külsheimer Hoher Herrgott, the Kembacher Sonnenberg and the Tauberbischofsheimer Edelberg. Melanie Seeber and her boyfriend Markus Reisle have been working on the Gerbachhof in Bolanden for three years. Soon they will take over the organic farm from Uli Zerger and Eva Mundkowski. After graduating from high school, Melanie discovered her love of agriculture on a farm in New Zealand. While studying agricultural sciences in Hohenheim, she met Markus. Both decided to look for a farm to live their dream. Melanie and Markus are redesigning the arable farm and making it fit for the future. Melanie takes care of the animals, while Markus focuses on arable farming. On 75 hectares, they grow spelt, oats, wheat, rye and millet, as well as sweet lupins, chickpeas and dried beans.
