The series was produced by original Gidget series producer Harry Ackerman and was launched after the television movie Gidget's Summer Reunion starring Caryn Richman as Gidget aired in 1985. Richman would go on to reprise the role of Gidget in the series.

Gail's band delights a children's birthday party as their first 'gig'. During the party, Danny joins the band bringing vocals and sparks an interested talent-scout from a TV show (Rock Hunt), which progresses the band to audition. A musical metamorphosis starts to take place in the band so that it leads ""some"" of the band members down a selfish, uncompromising path that excludes the only band member who really has the composing talent, Gail.
