Married carnival performers are subjected to the abuses of their employer in this silent film gem that has not received as much attention as it deserves. When the boss' unwanted advances on the wife are refused, he taunts a lion until it nearly kills her. But the other performers assist in a unique plot for revenge. Jaque Catelain directs and stars in this film made for influential French director Marcel L'Herbier's production company. Some sources also list L'Herbier as co-director, as he is credited here. The film boasts some rapid-fire editing techniques that were decades ahead of its time.

The King Of Musang King
Mao Shan (Jack Neo) is an ambitious durian farmer who wishes to expand his sales overseas, against pressures from the “Three Heavenly Kings” of the business. He helps Mei Lian (Yeo Yann Yann), his neighbour and sole supporter, to improve her durian farm harvests, and develops feelings for her in the process. However, Mei Lian’s long-separated husband, Jin Shui (Mark Lee), returns, complicating things. Jin Shui tries to influence Mei Lian’s children against Mao Shan, as Mao Shan fights to save both their businesses and win Mei Lian’s heart.

Jia Ying, a sales manager of real estate, is mean and indifferent, still remains single. She has never expected something like this would have happened to her. After her customers were gone, Jia found that she has left her personal phone at the model room. As she just stepped into the elevator, a horrid thundering comes, and the next thing she knew, she was waked from the dark, trapped among the destroyed elevator, and all she got was a cracked work phone, a lighter and a handbag. Jia managed to recover the phone and called for help, while the signal was fitful, and she cannot even remember her bes-tie or relative's number. The destroyed elevator fell again, iron stabbed into her thigh and caused badly bleeding. Jia kept trying on dialing, without the expectation to find a hidden conspiracy, as well as a bloody monster lurked deep in the dark.

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an infected zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures," while a journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

Writer/director Sergey Kuchkov's obscure Russian science fiction effort from 1993, simply called MONSTERS in English, has a photographer joining a team of scientists and a couple of military dudes to check out a town where a nuclear meltdown has led to a mass evacuation (shades of Chernobyl) and the ludicrous mutation of rats, snakes, crayfish, crows and a hopelessly unfrightening tortoise. With FX that looked primitive in FOOD OF THE GODS (1976) rendered even more primitively, this is worth it for the tortoise, which is meant to be scary as our protagonists run (???) from it and try to avoid its rubbery head as the thing looms in a window by way of a very obvious broomstick.
