The director of the theater in Győr, a city in Hungary, dies unexpectedly in the middle of the season. Boday Balázs, a once highly popular actor, is temporarily placed in his position. Boday arrives in the city with two objectives: firstly, to rescue the theater from bankruptcy, and secondly, to meet his never-before-seen daughter born out of wedlock, whom her mother (the city's current mayor) has kept him away from. Balázs quickly gets to know the theater, the ensemble, the staff, and even finds friends. However, he also encounters adversaries who do everything they can to ensure Boday does not receive his permanent appointment.

The new director gets acquainted with the building, the company, and the city. The theater's main director is still away, directing in Finland. Lajos Varga, the technical director's wife, is expecting a baby every hour. Two young actors find each other: but love permeates the entire theater.
Finally, Keserű, the main director, returns from his international guest performance. However, Zoli Kristóf, with his leg in a cast, goes up to Budapest to his sister. The new director launches a dubbing studio, but Uncle Misi gets into big trouble. The program changes due to many financial reasons. The mayor's wife's secret is revealed.
Boday entrusts the direction of 'Gül Baba' to Keserű, thereby making more enemies. The young people temporarily fall out, but thanks to Uncle Misi's intervention, they soon make up. Zoli Kristóf is recuperating in Budapest under the supervision of Nurse Kardos. Tihanyi, Mayer, and Radocsay continue their scheming against Boday.
A new face appears among those applying for the theater: the wealthy Káli Győző. He finds supporters within the company as well. The rehearsals for 'Gül Baba' are underway. Boday strives to keep the company together, while the opposition resorts to increasingly unscrupulous methods.
